Genesis

Audiovisual Tapestry

Using the same innovative methods of the Power of Light, we created a rich, multimedia, audiovisual tapestry that would give viewers a brief, immersive history of light — from the big bang until the present day. PHOS, an architectural lighting design firm, is dedicated to building awareness and enthusiasm for light’s impact. They believe light, whether natural or artificial, has the power to shape how we feel and interact with the world.

Challenge

The challenge was to distil the core stages of human evolution into a structure for the film, so audiences may experience episodes in our relationship with light — from ancient single-cell organisms to the megastructures of modernity. Genesis is a guided tour through what may have gone wrong and ends with a simple question of what we can do to fix it.

Insights

At the core of the PHOS philosophy is the belief that light is not just a functional necessity but a fundamental aspect of our well-being. They understand that the quality of light in a space can profoundly impact our mood, productivity, and overall health. This is why they have dedicated themselves to creating luminaires that mimic the shapes, textures and natural rhythms of light found in nature. This is the essence of biophilic design, and an ethos they feel is lacking from the lighting industry.

As a sequel to ‘The Power of Light’, Genesis was created in collaboration with PHOS, to both celebrate the launch of their new Genesis microchip and challenge the status quo on lighting design — asking audiences and designers alike, where have we gone wrong? What can we do to bring us back in line with nature?

Solution

The brief for the film was simple:  tell a story about our ‘relationship history’ with light. How it has changed. How it must also change for the better. Genesis had to be a call to action.

Results

Told a story about light’s relationship history

Highlighted changes needed for improvement
