Obstacle turned 12, meaning we’re well into our 100-year journey of creating Film with Heart.
100-Year Mission
At Obstacle Films, our mission spans a century, driven by a simple but powerful idea: the heart in a film makes all the difference. We call it the "1-degree adjustment" — the often imperceptible shift that turns a good film into a great one. Every day, we focus on that 1-degree of emotional depth, so each project we create has a lasting impact.
We focus on long-termism, with the goal of one day passing our vision on and inspiring the next generation of filmmakers.
The lifecycle of many businesses now lies between 12 and 15 years, reflecting the fast-paced nature of society. At Obstacle, we focus on the process over speed. It’s important to us to get it right — to create with care, at the right pace.
Our 100-year commitment to our clients means that we are creating each project with heart, staying true to our values.
Film with Heart
Obstacle is the home of Film with Heart. It’s in every story we tell, where a genuine narrative connects with audiences deeply.
Heart describes the people we are drawn to, the projects we choose, our process, and the emotionally intelligent campaigns we create. All must have heart. Because with heart, we enjoy unlocking a project together. More importantly, with heart, we can thrive together in the long term.
Heart is what audiences connect with.
Heart is what the market wants.
Heart is what brands need.
This means, that through storytelling, we encourage a collaborative environment driven by a shared passion for creativity with heart, prioritising a genuine narrative that connects with the audience on an emotional level. "Emotional storytelling boosts audience engagement by 65%" — Harvard Business Review.
What's next?
Moving into our 13th year means laying the next brick of Film with Heart. Every adjustment, every degree closer to emotion, brings us closer to that 100-year vision — a legacy of films that truly connect and inspire.
“You don’t become heroic by solving the problem if there’s no obstacle to overcome.” — The Science of Storytelling by William Storr.
